Field of Dreams Made Possible By Local Volunteers
On Saturday, May 5, 2007 a group of student volunteers from the Dean College Community Outreach Program and CampusCare® joined forces to reconstruct the field at the Davis Thayer School playground in Franklin.
The field, used for recess by elementary school children as well as for Little League, was a safety hazard in its previous state (see before and after pictures). It was uneven, laden with holes and rocks, and often flooded on account of poor drainage. To repair these issues, the field required extensive work, necessitating the use of various machines including a specialized laser grader to ensure a level playing surface.
With just 7 days notice, the team of volunteers was able to create phenomenal results that the youth of Franklin will enjoy all summer long and for years to come. The cost of the materials was funded by a grant that Home Depot provided to Dean College. The engineering, layout, equipment, and labor were donated by CampusCare®.
Ryan Jette, Director of Recreation for the town of Franklin expresses the magnitude of what was accomplished, "I can’t say enough about what this will mean for a young boy in the little league program, or the physically challenged child that uses this field on Sundays. Not to mention, the elementary student who is now playing on a quality field for recess."
